Tobey Maguire Sued Over Illegal Poker Games
June 22nd, 2011Tobey Maguire looking strangely shell-shocked at the 2007 WSOP. Perhaps the stakes were too low.
It’s being reported that Spiderman star Tobey Maguire is being sued over allegedly being involved in an illegal poker game.
The lawsuit is coming from a hedge fund manager who was down $300K to Maguire from the No Limit Holdem games they played in at various luxury suites of upscale Beverly Hills hotels.
The alleged games were invitation only and were attended by various A-list celebrities, businessmen and attorneys. Star Magazine has reported that the CEO of Ruderman Capital Partners, Brad Ruderman, was under investigation by the FBI for losing $25 million of investor money playing at these games.
Ruderman has already been covicted of two counts of wire fraud and two counts of investment advisor fraud and has been sentenced to jail for seven years. He has hired lawyers to file civil suits against the players who won the most off of him claiming that the games were illegal and that the losses should therefore be returned.
Maguire has apparently hired a lawyer and is making the defense that the games were not actually illegal.
2011 WSOP Attendance After the First Nine Events
June 7th, 2011So far the poker players and media who have been predicting doom and gloom for WSOP attendance have been about as wrong as this guy.
With nine WSOP events registered so far (including the casino employees), we’re able to more or less take the temperature of the WSOP attendance and things are looking good with only three of the tournaments experiencing a drop in participants from last year while the other six showed modest increases.
But the 2011 WSOP is still in its infancy and there’s still time for players to get gun shy as they see their bankrolls shrink, but these are poker players we’re talking about and the WSOP is still the tournament series to end all tournaments series – so the fields so far are probably a pretty good indication that we won’t see a dramatic drop in the Main Event attendance.
Speaking of which, how would you like to do your part to keep those WSOP numbers up? It’s as easy as winning one of Cake Poker’s WSOP online satellites. The last WSOP Main Event Final qualifier runs on June 19th so you still have two Sundays to score your seat.
You can also play in our WSOP Sit-n-Go Step Tournaments which let you march your way from a $2 buy-in up to a $2,500 prize package.
Nebraska Man Cleans Up on Cake Poker
May 20th, 2011You might say that ollie1101 of Nebraska had a pretty good day at the tables last Sunday when he decided to play in both the $25K Guaranteed and WSOP Series 2011 Final Qualifier and won! The icing on the proverbial cake was that he was playing both tournaments at the same time.
So my congratulations go out to ollie1101 for his double win and his $18,437.50 payday. I emailed him to ask what WSOP events he was planning on playing and what his secret was to having such an epic day but he was too busy lighting cigars off hundred dollar bills to respond, which I totally get. It’s no biggie. I wouldn’t have time for me either – *sniff*.
For the rest of you, should you survive the Rapture on Saturday, remember that Sunday has all the biggest poker tourneys including the 2011 WSOP qualifier with its $13K prize package and the $25,000 Guaranteed at 1PM and 2PM PST respectively. Play them simultaneously because you never know when you might pull an ollie.
Cake Poker Players Exit on Day 2 of Irish Open
April 24th, 2011Yohello plays next to famous former football star Teddy Sheringham
Cake Poker player, Yohello was up 29k to 94K after winning several hands in a row today in Day 2 of the Irish Open. He picked up KK UTG raised 2.1x the BB and got called by a middle position player. Flop came 9-5-2. He checked and the villain bets out, and he raises all-in. He called with Q-9 and didn’t improve so he got knocked out and Yohello doubled!
After being card dead for a while he picked up 8-8 in middle position versus a middle position raiser. He reraised and got shoved on. He was pot committed to call, unfortunately the guy showed A-A. He lost a big pot got down to 15k, shoved a couple times, got it up a little bit. Then right before dinner break pickedup A-6s in the CO with about 7.5 bbs. He shoved, and the BB woke up with J-J and he got eliminated. He was Cake’s last man standing!
We spoke to Yohello (a.k.a Anthony from Parkland, Florida) afterwards and he said, “It was my first live poker event and to get to Day Two and be the last Cake player standing against some of the best players in world poker was fantastic and I’m looking forward to getting back home and qualifying for Vegas this summer. You can’t win a tournament if you don’t play in it.”
Apucis on Day 2 of the Irish Open
Apucis started Day 2 with 30K and after an hour doubled it to 60K. He played it out for 2 hours where his best hand was 10 high. It was a tough table with some famous players including Marty Smyth the 2007 winner of the Irish Open. With only 22k left at level 13 table 13, the actor from Pecs, Hungary was on the big blind with A-A. He got a raise from the button and went all-in and got called with K-9. The flop was 9-10-J mixed, turn was a K and the river was a 3. After a great first tournament Apucis finished in 139 position out of 615 players.
Istvan stated afterwards, “I really enjoyed my experience at the Irish Open, one of the highlights was being at the feature table for 2 hours. I am really looking forward to trying to make Vegas via the Series on Cake, and will be back to Dublin next Easter.”
Cake Network player Brendan Hogan next to poker pro Dan Harrington
Congrats to all the Cake players for not just qualifying but for making solid runs at the Irish Open. You guys made us proud and we’re already looking forward to cheering our players on at the WSOP this year. For those looking to take their game to Vegas just check out our WSOP online satellites.
Three Cake Players Advance to Day 2 of Irish Open
April 23rd, 2011Apucis at the Irish Open feature table.
It’s 2:00 am in Dublin and Day 1 action is finished with 296 remaining players, roughly ½ of the starting field. The players are busy putting their chips in bags so they can enjoyed a well earned drink and live entertainment at the lounge bar which is just outside the tournament room.
All three Cake Poker qualifiers have made it through Day 1. YoHello has 31K in chips heading into Day 2 followed by Apucis with 30K.
Unfortunately we don’t have a count for Elpomus at this point. They have played a very long day but have poven themselves worthy to play with pros like Andy Black, Devilfish, Neil Channing, Dan Harrington and Mel Judah who are all still in contention as well.
YoHello is happy for some reason. We have no idea why. Must be running well, yeah that’s it.
Eplomus sees into your heart with laser eyes. LASER EYES!
Good luck in Day 2 and beyond guys!
April Fools’ Jokes of the Poker World
April 1st, 2011Remembering the glory days of last year’s April 1.
Frankly, I’m disappointed. Most of the key poker sites that might be expected to have a quality April Fools’ joke just haven’t bothered. Last year Bodog had hardcore pictures of Founder Calvin Ayre having sex on their blog, this year nada. Poker News doesn’t seem to have anything and neither does PokerLisitings, although that’s probably because they were so demoralized after we beat them to the punch on the same joke about Mats Sundin being Isildur1. Sure they did it way better, funnier and properly by actually posting it on April 1, but we cheated and posted it early and scooped them. To this day, on every April, if you listen carefully you can hear the cries of PokerListing writers asking, “How? How did they know what we were working on?”
The answer is we didn’t. We just got lucky.
Even Wicked Chops Poker, who you would imagine might spend half the year cooking up the ultimate April Fool’s joke didn’t give it a go other than to post the latest episode of The Micros which, by the way, is now officially one of the greatest videos on the Internet.
We did find this at Cardschat. It plays the game well in that it’s ridiculous while still almost believable.
So what else is out there that we’re missing?
Turbo Gold Cards and Match & Win Return
March 31st, 2011Cake Poker welcomes the return of spring by bringing back its popular Match & Win and Turbo Gold Card promotions, plus qualifiers for this year’s World Series of Poker continue.
Returning on April 1st, and running for the entire month, Cake Poker is bringing back its popular Turbo Gold Cards promotion. That means that every day of the week Gold Cards will be rushing to the tables twice as often between 6-8am, 2-4pm and 8-10pm GMT.
To compliment the return of Turbo Gold Cards, Cake is also bringing back Match & Win for the entire month of April. Match & Win is a fun and easy promotion where players can earn cash and prizes for the Gold Cards. Players simply redeem the Gold Cards they earn that month for cash, tournament tickets and Gold Chips by matching their cards to the Match & Win game board located in the Rewards section of the Cake Poker software.
Both of these promotions are built around Cake Poker’s Gold Card Reward Program where ring game players earn randomly released Gold Cards as they play. Players can collect these cards until they choose to redeem them in one of Cake Poker’s daily Gold Card tournaments or sell them for cash at The Exchange, a player-to-player marketplace in which players can buy and sell Gold Cards.
Also in April, Cake Poker continues its qualifiers for this year’s WSOP in Las Vegas, Nevada. This year’s event will host over 70,000 entrants all vying for more than $180,000,000 in prize money and the crowning glory every poker player dreams of – a WSOP bracelet.
At Cake, players can build their very own ultimate Las Vegas experience with two different types of online WSOP qualifiers. The first is a series of multi-table tournaments with a weekly final awarding the winner a $13,000 prize package. The second way is through daily Sit-n-Go step tournaments. These step tournaments let players advance to a final that awards the winning player a $2,500 prize package and helps them build up their “WSOP fund” for top of the line accommodations, 4 star restaurants and whatever else their hearts desire while in Sin City. Players can win as many of each of the packages as they want and then use the cash however they wish. Satellites for both formats will run daily for as little as $1.10.

Rebecca Black’s Tears for Sale on eBay
March 18th, 2011The alleged tears of Rebecca Black.
If you’re into collecting the salty sweet taste of despair, you might be interested in this little offering at eBay. Yes, we knew it was only a matter of time, and now Rebecca Black’s tears are for sale on the Internet.
For the few of you out there who haven’t heard, Rebecca Black is the new Internet singing sensation who is famous primarily for how incredibly vapid her lyrics are. She recently hit the top 100 on iTunes sales and is burning up the charts through nothing more than the pure ironic enjoyment she offers listeners.
Check it while it’s live since we can’t confirm the veracity of the sale but it seems perfectly plausible that there is a whole trail of Rebecca Black tears dripping around Orange County right now.
