World Team Poker Coming to the Golden Nugget

by March 15th, 2010

World Team Poker is coming to the Golden Nugget this May.

If watching the same old poker tournament format that’s been around since the 1970s is getting a little boring for you, World Team Poker might be just what the doctor ordered. The new competition’s inaugural event has been scheduled for May 19 at the Golden Nugget in downtown Las Vegas.

Each of the eight national teams competing in the event will have a captain and four players, or in some cases two co-captains and three other players. Already signed on to captain the teams that will compete in the event are Phil Hellmuth (Team USA), Tony G and Jeffrey Lisandro (Team Australia), Ben Roberts (Team England), Johnny Chan and David Chiu (Team China), Eli Elezra (Team Israel), George Kapalas (Team Greece), Men Nguyen (Team Vietnam) and Juliano Maesano (Team Brazil). As you can see the national designations for the teams are rather loose, since some of these guys actually live in the United States, but that shouldn’t stop anybody from having a good time playing for “Pride, Passion, Country” once the event gets going.

The buy-in for each team will be $50,000 and the tournament will be structured as a five-table shootout with alternating rounds of limit, pot-limit, and no-limit hold’em. Television cameras will be on hand to record the entire event for later distribution with professional poker player Kenna James in the commentary booth, but the organizers also plan to stream the event on a short delay at the World Team Poker website as it plays out. And if you have a slow net connection and can’t wait to see your favorite poker pros on TV, the event will be open to the public down at the Golden Nugget.
