WSOP: Tony G Quits and Goes Home
June 14th, 2010
Tony G in happier times at the poker table.
Though it’s not even half over, Tony G has had more than enough of the 2010 World Series of Poker. Frustrated by a perceived WSOP snub, and more early trips to the rail than cashes, the Aussie poker pro has decided to run on home.
He came into this year’s tournament series with his eyes on an elusive prize. Though he has fourteen career WSOP cashes, good for $430,000 or so, he’s never won a bracelet. But based on his lack of results at this year’s Series so far, he’s obviously feeling like this is not his year. He had this to say: “I have a bit of burnout going on, and I’m running bad… I am no longer having fun, it’s time to do something else and that will be leaving for home.”
Part of the reason for his unceremonious departure seems to be what he sees as a snub from the WSOP. He didn’t receive an invitation to the nine player playoff for the final seat at the upcoming Tournament of Champions. He said: “I wasn’t asked, and I’ve played at all the high buy-in events, I’m very high-profile and good poker show material…The WSOP is being unfair with this decision and because of it I may just pass on the WSOP and the Main Event.”
So we should know soon if this is a real “threat”, or if he’s just trying to drum up a little press for himself. Given the fact he’s won big at all levels of poker, but is still in search of that WSOP bracelet, nobody should be too surprised if his departure from Vegas is short-lived.
