US Open Brawl (Video)

by September 3rd, 2010

Video of a brawl in the stands at a US Open match. (video from YouTube)

Tennis is generally thought of as one of the more civilized games around, but as video of the US Open brawl shows, that’s not always the case.

You can and should watch the fun for yourself, but here’s a summary for those who can’t stomach watching some good-natured inter-generational violence:

It all happened in the cheap seats at a US Open tennis match at Arthur Ashe stadium, between Novak Djokovic and Philipp Petzschner. A young guy starts yapping at a middle-aged woman. You can’t hear what they’re saying, but from their body-language, you can tell it’s pretty heated.

Finally, the woman sits down. The young guy keeps talking though, and suddenly the woman’s companion, a grandfatherly-aged gentleman, steps in and decks the young guy. Both combatants go tumbling into the next row of stands, with the old guy clearly getting the worst of it. From there, things get worse, as the brawl spreads to others in the crowd, before finally being stopped by stadium security.

According to reports, both the young man and the woman were carted off by police, after being handcuffed. Oh, and after Djokovic won the match, he said only that he hoped the fight in the stands didn’t involve any of his fellow Serbians.
