Mike Matusow Wins Florida State Poker Championship
August 11th, 2010
Perhaps a little negative reinforcement was all Mike Matusow needed.
Loudmouth poker pro Mike Matusow, who currently owes Ted Forrest $2 million after losing a weight-loss prop bet, just won his first open-field event since the 2008 WSOP. Matusow won the Florida State Poker Championship main event at the Isle Casino and Racing in Pompano Beach, grabbing $103,000 after running incredibly well at the final table. The $1,100 buy-in event drew more than 410 players, crushing the $250,000 guaranteed prize pool.
Matusow stirred up a bit of controversy last week when he came to town for the tournament and a poker seminar, calling the players in Florida “terrible.” At least twice at the final table, though, it was the Las Vegas pro who caught improbable cards against locals who had big edges against him. With a slow structure and plenty of chips, those little breaks were all he needed to go on to victory.
The win makes Mike Matusow the second poker pro to win six figures in a Florida poker tournament in less than a week, barely eclipsing Noah Schwartz’s $100,650 win in last week’s Summer Open Series at the Hard Rock in Hollywood. Unlike Schwartz, though, he won’t be hanging on to any of his gains since Ted Forrest was probably on a plane to Florida within seconds of seeing Matusow tweet about his Florida State Poker Championship victory.
UPDATE Ever the class act, Matusow let the world know that his weight bet with Ted Forrest is settled via Twitter with this pithy statement: “To allyou idiots digging into my finances Ted Forrest has been paid so go jerk off”
