Doyle Brunson the Athlete and Poker Pro

When you see Doyle Brunson wheeling around the WSOP tournament floor in his scooter it’s hard to imagine that once upon a time he was a formidable athlete. It’s true though and the proof is in the fact that he was just inducted into Hardin-Simmons University Athletic Hall of Fame.

Back in the day, as in around 60 years ago, Doyle Brunson was both a track star and basketball hero. After college he was being looked at by the Minnesota Lakers as an NBA prospect. Unfortunately for Texas Dolly, that summer he took a job unloading sheetrock and ended up breaking his leg in two places when stacks of it shifted and crushed him.

The injury may have destroyed Brunson’s hopes of ever going on to become a professional athlete, but it did lead to him increasing the amount of poker he played. It didn’t take long before he would be reborn as a poker legend.

Speaking of which, Doyle and a whole whack of other top-notch poker pros have started playing each weeknight on special Cake Poker pro tables. Anyone can take them on at reasonable stakes as the pro tables are $5/$10 NL Texas Holdem and $10/$20 NL Holdem. The action starts at 7pm PST. They are highlighted in blue and are listed under the real money Ring Game tab.
