Avatar Number One Movie of All Time

by February 3rd, 2010

A little earlier today, the official announcement was made: Avatar Number One Movie of All Time. The James Cameron sci-fi, 3D epic finally surpassed the previous record-holder, which was the James Cameron sea-fi, 2D epic, Titanic. The amazing part in all this is that Avatar is a rip-off of the Disney movie Pocahontas only took 47 days to become the highest-grossing movie of all time. Titanic took 252 days before it reached top spot.

So how much has Avatar made? As of today, it’s pulled in $601 million in the US alone, and $1.8 billion in total worldwide box-office receipts. And that’s not even including the buck that some theaters charge you for those sweet 3D glasses.

One thing to remember, though, is that even though Avatar is the #1 movie of all time in total gross, that title comes with something of an asterisk. After all, that $1.8 billion is in 2010 dollars. When you adjust for inflation, the highest-grossing movie of all time is actually… wait for it… Gone With the Wind. That dusty old flick has earned $198 million in the US, most of it at a time when going to the movies cost a quarter. When you put that number into 2010 bucks, it’s somewhere around $1.5 billion in domestic gross. And by the way, when you adjust for inflation, Star Wars is the #2 movie of all time.
